Just arrived at The Garage!

1926 Austin Seven ‘R’ Type ‘ Top Hat

The first production saloon on the Austin Seven chassis, this model became known as the ‘Top Hat’ due to its endearing shape.

This example was first registered in Leeds and has actually spent a substantial part of its life off the road, having been laid up in a barn by its farmer owner following a mishap which caused damage to the rear axle in 1931.  She was eventually pulled out of the barn and given a ‘cosmetic refurbishment’ during the 1980’s.

Acquired by the present owner six years ago, the car was subjected to an extensive restoration which included straightening the chassis and overhauling all mechanical components, many of which showed minimal wear as the car’s working life had been very short.

The engine benefited from the fitment of a Phoenix crankshaft and the car returned to the road for the first time since 1931 in 2021 and won its class at Beaulieu in 2022. It also attended the Austin Seven Centenary event that same year.

Running very sweetly and ready for the next chapter, this delightful vintage Austin Seven always attracts much interest on her travels.
