Did you know that Basant Panchami is not only celebrated by Hindus but also by Sufi Muslims for the past 700 years? This tradition was started by Amir Khusro, who was born in Etah, Uttar Pradesh.

When his guru, Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, was deeply saddened by the death of his nephew, one day Khusro saw women dressed in yellow clothes, carrying flowers, and going to the temple. When Khusro asked them, they said they were going to please their God.

Inspired by this, Khusro decided to please his God, meaning his guru, and sang the song "Sakal ban phool rahi sarso" while going to his guru's house. Seeing him dance and sing in the guise of women, his guru laughed. In memory of this, Basant Panchami is celebrated at Nizamuddin's dargah in Delhi.
