Some might optimistically refer to our rainy and overcast week as “good striper weather” and by most accounts that would be pretty darn accurate. A good body of coastal stripers seems spread out from Cape May to Sandy Hook, with no real pinpoint “hot spot” to burn, except to say the Atlantic and Southern Ocean County beaches, jetties and sedges provide a good shot at that 40-incher you’ve been hunting for right now. Boats on the troll from Northern Ocean into Southern Monmouth County are finding good fish along their traditional patterns as well (break out the spoons, plugs & mojos).

The black drum bite on the Delaware Bay is entering its prime, while smaller dinner table fish are spread out along the bayshore beaches and from Cape May to Seaside. The Governor’s Cup surf fishing classic on Sunday should provide plenty of tournament targets, whether clam for bass/drum or bunker chunks for bass/blues.

Bluefish action is finally spreading out along the bays, beaches, rivers and inlets as well, and if rain holds enough into Saturday and Sunday the youngsters 16 and under will battle it out in the Nuncio Bruno kids bluefish tournament out of Chestnut Neck.
