Located in the county of Derbyshire, and around 10 miles east of Manchester, is the town of Glossop.

Geographically, Glossop is situated at the northwestern fringe of the Peak District National Park. Just under two miles to the west is the site of a 1st century Roman fort known as Ardotalia, which later acquired the name Melandra Castle.

The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded Glossop as a hamlet. Its name is believed to derive from Old English for 'Glott's Hop', where Glott was the name of an Anglo-Saxon settler and 'hop' means valley. In 1290 a market charter was granted to Glossop by Edward I. The market was originally held in what is today known as Old Glossop - a village about half a mile northeast of the town centre of today.

In 1606 Glossop came into ownership of the Howard family, the Dukes of Norfolk, who held it for the next 300 years. Following the onset of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, the area became a centre for the cotton-spinning industry. The mill owners began to require more water and better access to coal in order to expand. Consequently, they moved to the area where the town centre of today stands. It became known as Howardtown, and within a few decades it had outgrown the original settlement. When the railways arrived here, it inherited the name Glossop.

The town's railway station opened in 1845 courtesy of the Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway. The line originally ran from Sheffield to Manchester, traversing the entirety of the Peak District. However, in 1970 it was cut down to a branch line from Manchester in the west to the twin termini of Glossop and Hadfield to the east.
