Johann Sebastian Bach wrote BWV 120 "Gott, man lobet dich in der Stille" (God, we praise thee now in the stillness) for the annual change of councils, which was celebrated on St Bartholomew’s Day in Leipzig’s Nikolai Church.
The change of councils was considered a highly important event and being a part of it was a task of great honour for Bach as municipal music director. Therefore, the cantata’s musical quality and large instrumentation are created for the purpose of this festive event.

In this episode of "Bach Factory", Xoán Castiñeira and Rudolf Lutz explore the complexity of this grand cantata, and help us get to know it better.

"Bach Factory" is a video series by the J.S. Bach-Stiftung St. Gallen that gives you interesting insights into Bach's cantatas – including exclusive excerpts from their live performance.
