Tchaikovsky dedicated The Children's Album to his favorite nephew, Vladimir Davydov. The twenty-four pieces include imagined scenes from childhood, dances, and folk songs. This piece depicts a child caring for a doll that is "sick". One can hear her tenderly rocking the doll and worrying about her state of health. The subject matter is similar to a scene from The Nutcracker, although the music is quite different.
