Your parathyroid glands, located near your thyroid, produce PTH to help balance calcium and phosphorus in your body. But when your kidneys aren’t functioning well, they struggle to maintain that balance. As a result, PTH levels can rise, leading to a condition called Secondary Hyperparathyroidism (SHPT)—a common issue among people with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Left unchecked, high PTH levels can weaken bones and cause other complications.

Most people think of kidneys as just filters, but they do so much more. One of their essential jobs is to activate Vitamin D, which is needed for your body to absorb calcium effectively. When your kidneys become weak, this Vitamin D activation slows down. And without enough usable Vitamin D, your bones can start to become brittle and fragile. That’s why kidney health is directly connected to your bone strength.

In healthy individuals, sunlight helps the body make Vitamin D, and the kidneys convert it into its active form. But for kidney patients, this conversion process is impaired. Even with enough sunlight or calcium-rich foods, absorption doesn’t happen properly. To support bone health, doctors often prescribe active forms of Vitamin D and calcium, such as Calcitriol or Calcium Acetate, which are already processed and easier for the body to use. But it’s important to remember: never take these supplements without medical supervision.
