Released in arcades in Japan in 1992 by Banpresto (licensed to Fabtek for the US and another distributor for Australia/New Zealand), Super Spacefortress Macross is a vertical scrolling shooter based on the 1982 anime series (one of three different series that an American company pulled from to create the popular cartoon series "Robotech"). The story of this game is based more on the 1984 movie "Macross: Do You Remember Love?" The story is briefly told in short anime-style cutscenes before each of the 7 stages with no audio (just background music). To get the true ending at the end of the final stage, the game must be completed twice in a row. The first clear loops the game back to start at higher difficulty. If you complete the second loop, you get to see the credits and the game ends.
The player begins and respawns as the Fighter, a standard space craft with a spread shot, but can also collect items to transform into a Gerwalk, a craft with a powerful laser shot, or a Battroid, which can fire a constant stream of homing missiles, and also back to Fighter. Some pickups award special armor that grants spread shots and powerful missiles while protecting the player from one hit (upon taking a hit the armor is lost and the player becomes the Battroid). The player also has NBOMBs, which deal major damage over a significant portion of the screen while canceling enemy projectiles. You can also collect pickups that grant extra lives but these are very rare (you'll maybe find 2 in the entire game) as well as medals and other rare items that award bonus points.
