Just at the apex of the CD in 1999, Sony released the only portable CD player ever to feature a slide-in mechanism. To understand this crazy device, we’ll take a deep dive into how their line of compact CD players became the Discman, and later the CD walkman. The D-EJ01 (D-E01) launched many of their category-defining technologies: G-Protection, Quick focus-laser, a compact, disc-shaped body, and more.
