Beyond Movement – Non-Motor Symptoms in Parkinson Disease | PMD Alliance Continuing Education

This session explores Parkinson disease (PD) beyond its motor symptoms, focusing on non-motor manifestations and autonomic nervous system dysfunction. It covers the pathophysiology of PD, including pre-motor symptoms and the Braak hypothesis. Special attention is given to neurogenic orthostatic hypotension (nOH) and sialorrhea (excessive drooling), two common autonomic issues in PD. The presentation discusses diagnostic criteria, prevalence, and impact on patients' quality of life. Treatment options are reviewed, with emphasis on conservative measures and FDA-approved therapies, including botulinum toxin injections for sialorrhea. This comprehensive overview aims to improve recognition and management of these challenging aspects of PD.
