Trumpeter Swan facts: a conservation miracle | Animal Fact Files

These swans are a conservation success story because they were on the brink of extinction in the mid 1900s. Today their numbers are in the tens of thousands. Trumpeter swans get their name from their trumpet like call. Some authorities believe trumpeter swans and whooper swans should be classified as the same species, but for now they are separated.

Range: North America
Size: 25 pounds (11.3kg); 8 foot (2.4m) wingspan
Diet: aquatic plants and berries; insects while young
Lifespan: 20+ years
