Emmanuel Macron is counting the costs of his remark on the leader of the Vichy regime, Petain. The french president described Petain as a great soldier when asked to comment on a planned hommage to the military commanders in the honour of the centenary anniversary of the First World War. Petain's shame came in World War Two with his collaboration with the Nazi regime, one of the most painful periods of french history.
