Attabad spillway Aug 6 2010

On January 4 2010 a massive slope failure destroyed the villages of Atta Abad and Sarat, displaced 141 households, and blocked the Hunza River to a depth of about 120 metres. A lake formed behind the landslide deposit. This video, taken August 6 2010, shows the spillway through which water is flowing over the landslide deposit and into the main Hunza River channel. When, whether and to what extent the 25+ kilometre long lake drains depends on the extent to which the spillway erodes the landslide deposit. Presently, flow through the spillway and erosion of the channel seems to be controlled by two large boulders pictured in the video.
