The inaugural Peter Underwood Peace and Justice Memorial Lecture is a biennial event that commemorates the life, achievements and values of former Governor of Tasmania Peter Underwood AC (1937 - 2014). The Friends' School has a special interest in honouring Peter's Legacy as he served on the Executive Committee of The Friends' School Board in the 1990s. This was a difficult period for the school, with buildings in need of repair; with clearness of thought Peter Underwood guided the school through this time of renewal.

Promoting peace and justice was important to Peter. During his time as Governor of Tasmania he counselled caution in glorifying the horrors of war. "We must all strive for peace on a daily basis and ask the hard questions about the meaning of war, the causes of war and war's real outcomes."
