Join me, That Cycling Chimp on my most challenging 2024 gravel route yet, covering a thrilling journey from Kirroughtree Visitor Centre to Glentrool and back! This epic adventure took me through some of Scotland’s most breathtaking landscapes, and I couldn’t have asked for better weather, even if it was a bit unusual. The blistering heat in mid-September added an unexpected twist to the ride, pushing me to my limits and making this an unforgettable gravel cycling experience.

Starting at Kirroughtree, one of the renowned 7stanes mountain biking centres, the route quickly dives into the heart of Galloway Forest Park. The gravel paths were a mix of smooth and rugged terrain, perfect for any adventure cycling enthusiast. As I peddled deeper into the forest, I was greeted by the serene beauty of this natural wonderland. The towering trees provided some much-needed shade, but the heat was relentless, making every climb feel like an accomplishment.

One of the highlights of this route was the stunning Glentrool area. The scenery here is simply out of this world, with panoramic views that make every ounce of effort worth it. Riding along the shores of Loch Trool was an absolute dream. The crystal-clear waters glistened under the sun, offering a picturesque backdrop that made me pause to soak it all in. If you’re looking for a gravel route that combines challenging climbs with rewarding descents and stunning views, this is the one!

But the surprises didn’t stop there. Along the way, I stumbled upon several hidden waterfalls that were like nature’s secret gems. The sound of rushing water was a refreshing change of pace, providing a brief respite from the gruelling heat. These cascading falls, tucked away in the midst of dense woodland, added a magical touch to the ride.

The route back to Kirroughtree was just as exhilarating, with long stretches of flowing gravel paths that allowed me to pick up speed and really enjoy the ride. The mix of terrain kept things interesting, from rocky sections to smooth gravel that seemed to stretch on forever. This ride truly had it all: stunning landscapes, challenging climbs, and the kind of adventure that makes you fall in love with gravel cycling all over again.

Whether you’re an experienced gravel rider or just looking for your next big adventure, the Kirroughtree to Glentrool route is one you won’t want to miss. It’s a testament to the beauty and challenge of gravel cycling in Scotland.
