App-based transport workers linked to Ola, Uber, and Rapido staged protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar as gig unions called a six-hour nationwide “All-India Breakdown” strike on February 7. Drivers logged out of ride-hailing apps to protest falling earnings, lack of government-notified minimum fares, and the use of private vehicles for commercial rides. A delegation of transport and delivery gig workers also met Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, seeking central legislation and better regulation in states. Unions say platform companies arbitrarily set fares, creating income insecurity for drivers. Recent economic survey data also highlights concerns over low earnings and the rapid growth of gig work.
