In this episode Divyanshi talks about the Kalinjar Fort. Situated approximately 102 kilometres from Khajuraho, Kalinjar Fort stands atop a hill 800 feet high, boasting a continuous occupation spanning over 1500 years. Originally believed to have been built during the Gupta dynasty in the 3rd century CE, some historical accounts trace its origins even earlier, around 249 CE. The fort's name, "Kalinjar," possibly derived from Shaivite ascetics using it as a retreat, suggests a connection to Shiva, the "Decayer of Time."
Under the Chandella dynasty from the 9th to 13th centuries CE, Kalinjar rose to prominence. King Yashovarman, the dynasty's founder, conquered the fort, although the exact date and previous ownership remain unclear. However, it wasn't until Mahmud of Ghazni's invasion in 1019 CE that Kalinjar gained widespread recognition. The fort, known for its impregnable walls, witnessed significant historical events, including the death of Afghan ruler Sher Shah Suri in 1545 during a siege.
Throughout history, Kalinjar passed hands between various rulers, including the Chandellas, Delhi Sultanate, and Mughals, before finally falling under British control in 1812. Despite several attempts by Indian revolutionaries during the Revolt of 1857, the fort remained under British possession until it was dismantled in 1866 to quell further uprisings.
