3I/ATLAS is the third confirmed interstellar object to pass through our Solar System, after ʻOumuamua (2017) and 2I/Borisov (2019). It was discovered on July 1, 2025, by the ATLAS telescope system in Chile.

The object follows a highly hyperbolic trajectory, proving it is not bound by the Sun’s gravity. Observations with the James Webb Space Telescope show that its coma is rich in carbon dioxide (CO₂), with traces of water, carbon monoxide, and dust. This unusual composition suggests it formed in a very different environment compared to comets in our Solar System.

Its size is estimated between hundreds of meters and 20 km, and its age between 3 and 14 billion years. Astronomers believe it likely originated in the thick disk of the Milky Way, making it far older than our Solar System.
