As principal of Champlin Park High School, it's Mike George's job to show off his school like a proud parent.
"There's a reason why 400-plus students are vacating Park Center and/or Osseo or other places to come to Champlin Park High School," George told a group touring the school Thursday night.
However, taking in those 400-plus students has maxed out the school's capacity.
"We really are [maxed out]," George said. "We find creative ways to make things work, and you can see that through our use of our portables, right?"
He's referring to portable classrooms that were placed in the parking lot in 1999. George says the portables compromise school security and expose students to the elements during the winter when they walk outside to get to the portable classrooms.
Those are points he hopes members of a facilities task force will address. Thursday night, the 31-person task force took time to learn more about the issues facing Champlin Park.
"And that includes also looking at the elementary schools that fall into the local middle schools that then end up in Champlin Park as a whole," said Kate Thunstrom, a task force member.
It remains to be seen what recommendations the task force will make to the Anoka-Hennepin School Board, but principal Mike George knows what he'd like to see.
"If we were able to wave a magic wand, Champlin Park high school would have a couple of additions on the southeast side and the northwest side, and really allow us to eliminate our portable classrooms."
The task force will come up with a final report for the Anoka-Hennepin School Board in January that will outline recommendations. The school board will then make a decision sometime in the spring.
