The wife and her lover is a light-hearted paraphrase of a fable by Marie de France, for soprano (Felicity Hayward), theorbo (Toby Carr) and alto recorder (Janet Oates). It was written for the Theorbo Today concert in 2021, founded by Janet Oates and funded by Arts Council England. www.theorbotoday.com

The composer says:"The cunning wife takes advantage of her husband’s gullibility to get her own way – not for the first time! When the wife is caught in flagrante with a lover, she convinces her husband – who humbly acquiesces - that he shouldn’t believe the evidence of his ‘misleading eyes’ – after all, when he looks at himself in the reflection of a barrel of water, he’s not actually under the water as his eyes suggest! Obviously, I can’t comment on the moral:
 
By this example you can clearly see
That having a crafty mind
Is more useful to many people
Than all their morals and upbringing."
