One man has just done that! So I find out how he raced a potent 528 hp Peugeot 306 for a full season in Thailand, won a stack of trophies, one at every race event plus he finished third in the championship on a total budget of just 58,000 Baht (that’s US$1,700 or 1,580 euros) and that includes 6,000 baht’s worth of food!

That’s what Waasin Sangrasamee achieved last year in the six round “Toyo Racing Car Thailand”, the most popular club racing championship! He threw all his money at building a 500 plus bhp monster Peugeot 306 and with the wallet empty he went racing on a shoestring.

But peanuts can be made to go an awful long way in Thailand and taking extreme cost saving steps such as camping in the paddock, scrounging a set of well used five-year-old slicks, acquiring a secondhand gearbox to replace the one he blew mid-season, towing his racecar to the circuits behind his pickup and no accidents along the way, despite this being just his second in racing (his first was in a 180 hp Peugeot 205), Waasin enjoyed a stellar year with five rounds at Pattaya’s Bira Circuit and the sixth at Buriram’s Chang International Circuit.

So I caught up with Waasin and we broke down the costs involved and how he made it work.
