This video talks about my favorite 35mm film SLR, the Canon A series. In particular the A-1, AE-1 and AE-1 PROGRAM.

The Canon A series were revolutionary cameras. I cannot stress how much I love the A series Canon cameras.

The AE-1 paved the way for many of the concepts of current camera designs. It popularised and devices like Power Winders and electronic Speedlites, making them a household name in the consumer market. The AE-1 was the first camera ever made to be controlled entirely by electronics precision rather than by mechanical functions. The AE-1 was then followed by the AE-1 PROGRAM and then with the A-1.

When they were first released, the general public was initially hesitant, and a lot of professional photographers did not trust the newfangled electronic design. However, over time, the design proved to be absolutely bullet proof, and was a runaway success. Over 1 million units were sold! The unique combination of electronic control and focal plane cloth shutter created a camera that will never die.

The A series are incredibly well made, and absolutely bullet proof. In fact, the A series soon became the official cameras of National Geographic, the US Navy and the 1980 and 1984 Olympic Games.

They offer very precise and stable timing of shutter speeds, which is also extended to other areas like auto flash-syncronisation when used with the Canon Speedlight flashes.

Exposure control on all cameras is a dream;

On the AE-1, just set A on the lens, choose a shutter speed and just shoot! Full manual over-ride is also possible by adjusting the aperture on the lens when you want to have full control over exposure.

The AE-1 PROGRAM works the same as the AE-1, but adds a "PROGRAM" mode, to allow for fully automatic control of shutter speed and aperture. By adjusting the aperture on the lens with the camera set to "P", you effectively activate an aperture priority exposure mode.

On the A-1, you have a large choice of exposure options, ranging from a fully automatic "PROGRAM", to aperture priority (controlled via the wheel on the camera or via the ring on the lens), shutter priority and of course fully manual mode. It also has a switch that enables double exposures, a rather rare feature in SLR cameras!

Anyway, enough talk, just trust me, whether you are a beginner or a pro, if you want a 35mm SLR camera, this is the one for you!
