INFOMAR is a joint Irish government programme between Geological Survey Ireland and the Marine Institute that maps the physical, chemical, and biological features of Ireland’s seabed. Work is progressing on a series of Marine Geoscience Reports based on identifying seabed and bedrock features from INFOMAR data and expanding geological outreach.
This talk will briefly introduce INFOMAR, then outline the report workflow: identify features from multibeam bathymetry and backscatter; integrate onshore–offshore datasets (GSI bedrock maps, Quaternary geomorphology, shallow seismic, sediment grabs and video, nautical charts, survey reports, and publications); map bedrock exposures and seabed lineaments to interpret joints, fractures, faults, and folds; and use sandwaves and related structures to infer hydrodynamics and sediment pathways. The outcome is a set of regional reports that highlight notable seabed features and provide concise, process-based interpretations. Aileen will then dive into a few favourite examples from the series.

About the lecturer
Aileen Bohan is a marine geologist and hydrographer contracted to the INFOMAR programme at Geological Survey Ireland. At GSI, along with marine geology, she works on the inshore survey fleet of five vessels, acquiring and processing hydrographic and geophysical data. She also works with GEBCO and with the Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 project, and has mapped the seabed in the Arctic, Atlantic, Southern, Indian, and Pacific oceans.
