Odalan Bali (Rehearsal) - Sanggar Çudamani

The rehearsal was recorded few days before the group from Sanggar Çudamani (Pengosekan, Bali) flew to USA and Canada to present it's acclaimed production "Odalan Bali: An Offering of Music and Dance". The performance features a stellar array of 26 artists including choreography and composition by I Dewa Putu Berata. The artistic director was born into a family of musicians and painters and studied under his father I Dewa Nyoman Sura. He is the founding member of Sanggar Çudamani. Sanggar Çudamani comprised of 60 members. I Dewa Putu Berata has directed numerous gamelan ensembles and works on various international projects throughout the world. I Nyoman Cerita, choreographer, learned dance at age 6 from his grandfather I Made Kenyir. He is recipient of numerous awards as well as from Titane Spectacles/Le Jardin Des Poiries in Paris. Emiko Saraswati Susilo was one of Çudamani's founding members. She began her formal studies in Javanese and Balinese dance under the direction of KRT Sasmintadipura and Ni Made Wiratini. She has studied Javanese singing from Tri Haryanto and Midiyanto. I Dewa Ketut Alit studied drumming with his father and began performing at age 11. Wayne Vitale (creator of ambient soundscapes) is a composer, performer, scholar, teacher and director of Gamelan Sekar Jaya, a California-based ensemble.
Çudamani's Odalan Bali (an odalan is the Balinese temple ceremony), features 26 of Bali finest dancers and musicians. The Odalan is a quintessential Balinese experience. Every Balinese belongs to a temple. Following the lunar calendar, every temple has an Odalan on its anniversary, which occurs every 210 days. On the video from second 0:13 we see the female dancer Dewa Ayu Eka Putri, standing besides her mother. Dewa Ayu is wearing blue shirt. At this moment Dewa Ayu is one of the greatest dancers in Bali. Despite her youth (when the video was recorded she was only 16) Dewa Ayu dances Taruna Gandrung or whatever virtuously, simply magisterially.
