“Winter Dreams” was first published in Metropolitan in 1922 and was eventually included in the anthology All the Sad Young Men. It follows the life of Dexter Green, who begins the story as a caddy on a golf course in Black Bear, Minnesota. He dreams of a more luxurious life than that offered by his grocer-father. On his last day as a caddy he meets Judy Jones. She drifts in and out of his life as attains wealth and status but remains distant. Like many Fitzgerald heroes, Dexter hitches his ideals to an ultimately unattainable lady, and reality intrudes in the end.
