After weeks of earthquake activity, lava started to pour out from a fissure in the evening of Mars 19th, first noticed as a bright light in the sky.
The eruption is the first on the Reykjanes peninsula in almost 800 years. Scientists suspect this to be the beginning of increasing volcanic activity with more eruptions in the area for the next centuries.

This eruption is expected to last for quite some time, months and even years. The lava has a chemical signature of a deep origin and the volcano is thus suspected to be feed by a large reservoir of molten lava.

Thousands of people have made their journey to see the volcano with their own eyes. After a 40 minute drive from Reykjavík city it will take about one and a half hour to hike towards the eruption from the main road. The eruption is in an area which is not inhabited by people so no infrastructure is in danger.
