Heath Van Der Waerden shares the story of his custom-built Holden Torana hatchback, affectionately nicknamed the "Sh#t Bird" by his mates. Starting with an Aussie Sunbird in 2012-2013, Heath embarked on an extensive modification journey in December 2014, completely transforming the vehicle by cutting and rebuilding numerous sections including the front, back, floor, and suspension areas.
His vision was to create an '80s-style flared hatchback with Japanese-inspired fitment and stance, featuring the perfect balance of dish and camber. The car sports a unique 16-inch front and 17-inch wheel combination, complemented by eye-catching paint work. While initially planned as a stripped-down two-seater with a roll cage, the build evolved into a more refined five-seater road car featuring a custom-made meter-wide aluminum sunroof.
Heath focused heavily on improving the car's handling characteristics, modifying the front double A-type suspension geometry and completely redesigning the rear suspension system for better performance. The biggest challenges during the build included perfecting the fiberglass panel fitment and ongoing issues with the oiling system, which recently led to a costly engine rebuild.
After 30,000 kilometers on the road, the car has proven itself as a capable daily driver. Heath continues to refine the build, particularly focusing on making it more durable for track use while maintaining its impressive performance capabilities. The car has participated in Optima Street Car events, hill climbs, and circuit racing sprints, showcasing its versatility as both a street and track machine.
