Dory tries to communicate with the whale because she thinks she can speak whale, but Marlin doesn't believe her. After they escape, Marlin thanks the whale by "speaking whale" and Dory says "I wish I could speak whale." Dory has short term memory issues. In Finding Dory, she reunites with her childhood friend Destiny and she remembers that she does speak whale. What is "speaking whale"?
