25 years ago, royalty from Sweden and Denmark, met to open the newly finished Öresund Bridge. On its anniversary, King Frederik and Queen Mary of Denmark came over to the Swedish side, where they were met by King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden.

The foursome was then driven to Peberholm, an artificial island roughly in the middle, that marks the border between the countries’ signal- and traffic control systems. They were treated to a little lecture about the local flora and fauna, and climbed a small viewing platform built for the occasion. Then the caravan continued on to Denmark.

On either side of the sound, the kings unveiled a pair of mounted binoculars as a gift to the public.

When the bridge was built, it was predicted to last about a hundred years. Recently, scientists at Lund University have presented plans for how to double that number, giving Swedes and Danes another 175 years to easily travel back and forth.
