TEXT FROM THE GOSPEL & HOMILY

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.

A proclamation of the holy gospel according to St. Mark. Glory to you, o Lord.

Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages of Caesarea Philippi. Along the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" They said in reply, "John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets." And he asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter said to him in reply, "You are the Christ." Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him. He began to teach them that the son of man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and rise after three days. He spoke this openly. Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. At this he turned around an, looking at his disciples, rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do." He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, "Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it."

The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Sometimes a little power can corrupt. It's really sad to think it but when you think of the many great scandals that have happened in our society and in history, usually, not always they are by people who started off with the best of intentions, but then after a while things started to go to their head. They started treating people differently and they act differently. There are people who have been corrupt with a little power. On a smaller scale the same thing happens and can be said of someone with a little knowledge. What happens is they begin to study something look up something and the next thing you know they are experts. Companies for example who in a very short time become a jack of all trades but master of none. What happens? In a brief time, they're no longer in existence. They begin to feel that they can go beyond their means why? Because they have just a little knowledge. But that's all it is. Is very little knowledge. Peter does the same thing. He has been rewarded by Jesus because he recognizes who Jesus really is. He knows it all now. He knows it all. But then Jesus has to put him in his place. Jesus has to let him know, you don't know it all. You're just learning. This is the tip of the iceberg. So in other words my sisters and brothers we have to make sure that we don't get on our high horse. And think that just because we know a little bit we know a lot. Because it doesn't matter how old or how young we are, there's still so much more about God that we have to learn. And so much more that we have to learn about our sisters and brothers. Let us learn from our experiences and also at times from our mistakes. Amen.
