Transgression - Regression Cycles is a fancy name for the changes in sea level. Sea level changes can occur on a global level or a regional level for different reasons. Today, we experience global climate change that continues to cause widespread sea level change, but local changes vary as compared to a general global sea level average. This global sea level change is primarily the result of melting glaciers but the climate science gets a little more complex than that. We’ll talk about that in future videos. For now, let’s learn what kind of rocks we get when the sea level goes up or down, aka the sea transgression or regression. What you’ll learn is that we end up with something called progradational or retrogradation stacking, and there is a general layering of sedimentary rocks that you’ll find. However, you’ll also learn how it can be a bit more complicated in the field due to rapid regression-transgressions or the changes over millions of years that can occur to the existing rocks. These layers are also heavily related to our deposits of coal and gas other important natural resources. One great example you can find in Colorado and Utah is the MesaVerde Group, a series of rock units that capture these sea level changes millions of years ago!
