I should mention that I'm a true amateur at the oud, having never sat down with a teacher. But the head of my group Al Qamar Ensemble asked me to make a video sharing what I know as he learns the oud, and I thought I might as well share it with you all!

It's just a quick run through seven maqams or scales (Rast, Bayati, Sikah, Nahawand, Ajam, Saba) using traditional Islamic songs as examples. I try to explain the finger positions as best as I can, but the only way to really "get" it is to try it yourself. Good luck to everyone out there learning an instrument - the curve is steep, but there's always a tipping point.
