Crime in the Turks and Caicos Islands has dropped by 40 percent, according to the latest police report — marking a major shift just one year after Commissioner Fitz Bailey took command of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force.

When Bailey arrived in November 2024, following retirement from the Jamaica Constabulary Force, the country was grappling with unprecedented violence, public fear, and emergency security measures. Expanded police powers and an aggressive reset of strategy followed.

New figures show double-digit declines in homicides, driven in part by decisive arrests after a mass shooting in July and enhanced regional support from Jamaica. Police say community cooperation has increased, and engagement with previously reluctant witnesses is improving.

Equally significant, officials note that tourism — the backbone of the TCI economy — has remained largely insulated from violent crime, reinforcing international confidence during a critical recovery period.

Internally, reforms continue, including tightened promotion standards, expanded international training, improved road safety enforcement, and stronger land and marine mobility.

As the country moves into a new year, police leadership stresses that while progress is clear, sustaining it will require continued vigilance, partnership, and time.
