Despite the Taliban's promises of a smooth handover, the US embassy shut down operations and advised Americans to hide in place rather than try to travel to the airport late in the day. Commercial flights were halted when intermittent gunfire erupted at the airport, according to two senior US military officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss current operations with The Associated Press news agency. Military evacuations proceeded, but the stoppage in commercial travel cut off one of the final options for Afghans escaping the country. Taliban militants deployed around Kabul as darkness fell on Sunday, taking over abandoned police stations and promising to ensure law and order during the transition.
