Part 2 of 7 --
PART TWO: "Anybody's Son Will Do"
This episode was nominated for an Academy-Award. Photographed on location at the United States Marine Corps Parris Island Training Depot in South Carolina, this film follows a group of young recruits through their gruelling ten-week “basic training.” Anybody’s Son Will Do provides insight into techniques that all armies use to indoctrinate recruits with a new set of morals–techniques that transform ordinary citizens into soldiers ready to kill, even to die, for their country. Part two of the seven-part series War, hosted by Gwynne Dyer, examining the nature, evolution and consequences of modern warfare.

Gwynne Dyer’s "War" is a trailblazing seven-part miniseries that delves into the history and evolution of warfare, tracing its development from the Bronze Age through the Napoleonic era, the World Wars, and into the nuclear age. Funded by the National Film Board of Canada, this ambitious project was filmed across ten countries, showcasing six different national armies, and includes compelling interviews with veterans and military experts. Dyer offers a thought-provoking exploration of the psychology behind warfare, patriotism, and the process of turning civilians into soldiers—delivering insights that had never been seen on television before.

Created during a period deeply influenced by the aftermath of the Vietnam War and the ongoing nuclear tensions of the Cold War, the series reflects the unique concerns of its time. It remains captivating, particularly in moments where 80-year-old World War I veterans share their stories alongside interviews with younger, active-duty Vietnam veterans in their 30s.

Dyer himself is as much a character as the series, with his distinct beard, long hair, sunglasses, and earth-toned corduroy. His calm yet authoritative voice ties it all together, making this series as visually memorable as it is intellectually engaging.

When I first saw this program on PBS late on night as an impressionable 10 year old, I was floored and mesmerized. I watched and re-watched the first three episodes until my VHS tape was worn out. This program alone inspired and set me on my course of making a living as a military historian in my own way.
