How to Manipulate Views in Revit Structure (Duplicate Views, Detailing & Callouts Explained)

Welcome to this tutorial. In this guide, you’ll learn how to manipulate views in Revit Structure effectively so you can work faster without damaging your original drawings.

In this video, we focus on a first floor plan that will be used to create beams, columns, and slabs. However, the plan already contains dimensions, texts, and other annotations that may not be needed for structural modeling. At the same time, you may want to keep the original plan intact so you can return to it later.

This is where view duplication in Revit becomes extremely useful.

Why You Should Duplicate Views in Revit Structure

Instead of deleting dimensions or texts directly from the plan, Revit allows you to duplicate views so you can work on a clean copy while preserving the original architectural layout.

To duplicate a view:

Right-click on the view.

Select Duplicate View.

Choose one of the available duplication options.

Revit provides three duplication options, and understanding the difference between them is critical.

Option 1: Duplicate (Without Detailing)

When you choose Duplicate, Revit copies only model elements and ignores annotation elements.

Annotation elements include:

Dimensions

Text

Detail lines

Filled regions

Model elements include:

Walls

Columns

Beams

Slabs

Using this option gives you a clean structural plan without dimensions or texts. This is ideal when working on structural modeling, where annotations are unnecessary.

After duplicating, you can rename the view, for example:
“02 First Floor Structure”

Option 2: Duplicate with Detailing

The Duplicate with Detailing option copies both model elements and annotation elements.

This means:

All dimensions remain

All text remains

No annotated element is missing

The duplicated view will automatically be named something like “First Floor Plan Copy 1”, showing it’s a direct copy of the original.

This option is best when you want to:

Maintain dimensions

Continue detailing

Preserve all annotations exactly as they are

The original plan also remains untouched.

Option 3: Duplicate as Independent

The third option is Duplicate as Independent.

This option also carries annotation elements, but it has a unique behavior:

The view becomes independent from the parent view

You’ll notice a selection boundary when hovering over it

It appears nested under the original view

This option is powerful and will be explained in more detail later in the training.

Creating Callout Views for Detailed Areas

Before wrapping up, let’s look at how to create detail callouts in Revit Structure.

Open a structural plan.

Go to the View tab.

Select Callout.

Choose a rectangular callout style.

Draw a rectangle around the area you want to detail (for example, a staircase).

Once you release the mouse, Revit automatically creates a new detailed view under the parent view. Opening this callout view allows you to add detailed annotations and construction information for that specific area.

Understanding Revit’s BIM Behavior

One important thing to understand about Revit is that it is a BIM (Building Information Modeling) software.

If you delete a model element (such as a window or wall) in one view, it will be deleted in all views. This is because Revit works with a single intelligent model, not separate drawings.

This is one of the major reasons Revit is considered one of the best BIM software solutions in the world.
