At the card table, card cheats use small mirrors that they hide in their lap, sometimes attach to their clothing or even hold inconspicuously to look at the cards from a distance without being noticed and thus gain an unfair advantage in the game. These devices are called "shiners". Modern technology allows us all to do the same with the front cameras on our phones - if used correctly.
