Описание к видео Battle of Gettysburg | Overrun at the Peach Orchard | 73rd NY Infantry | Project Past

The fight at the Peach Orchard was the site of some of the bloodiest fighting at Gettysburg. In this episode explore the Peach Orchard and walk in the footsteps of the 73rd New York Infantry. The 73rd New York Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment of Union Army in the American Civil War. The regiment was organized in New York City in May 1861, originally under the designation the Fourth Excelsior Regiment, as a Zouave regiment. Drawn from the ranks of the city's many volunteer fire companies, the unit was known alternately as the Second Fire Zouaves, after the 11th New York was known as the First Fire Zouaves. The 73rd New York Infantry was commanded at the Battle of Gettysburg by Major Michael Burns. This regiment would see intense fighting at the Peach Orchard on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg. Within minutes, almost half the regiment would become casualties while fighting against Barksdale’s brigade.
