Casato Prime Donne in Montalcino, is a Brunello winery in Tuscany where the vintners and the winemakers are all women, a unique situation in Italy, a flagship for women in the wine business.
The property is made up of 17 hectares taken up by Sangiovese vineyards from which the traditional style Brunello is born, produced in a small exclusive selection called “Brunello Prime Donne”.
It was produced for the first time with the 1993 vintage when Donatella Cinelli Colombini decided to reaffirm the importance of women’s taste in the choice of wine by creating the first Brunello selected by a female and international panel.
The harvest is always manual and its date is decided by tasting the grapes. It is in fact, in accordance with the day chosen to harvest the Ardita vineyard that the calendar of the grape harvest is fixed in the other vineyards at Casato Prime Donne.
Brunello di Montalcino Prime Donne is produced only in the best vintages in a small selection of 6,000 – 12,000 bottles per year. The quantity varies according to the quality of the harvest, in fact, in difficult vintages it is not produced.
Today, Brunello Prime Donne is exported to 30 countries around the world and is a symbol of courage, ethical values and a challenge to clichés.
Around the winery, walking along the Prime Donne trail, through the Brunello vineyards, you can discover a path with dedication quotes of the winners of the Casato Prime Donne Award and works of contemporary Tuscan artists, creations that interact with the beautiful Val d’Orcia landscape and with the visitors. The Casato Prime Donne Award is an International journalism and photography award, crowns the “Prima donna”, a female figure who is either an example or a help to the female world.
With its bright ruby red colour and complex and fine aromas, Brunello di Montalcino Prime Donne stands out for the perfect harmony of its components, satisfying the flavour that lengthens elegantly in a pleasant and persistent finish.
This excellent wine goes with important dishes such as roast meat, mature cheeses, game and can be aged for 30-40 years and over.
