If your Pap smear shows an abnormality of the cells in the cervix (cervical dysplasia) such as lesions or pre-cancerous changes, your Les Cours Medical Centre doctor may suggest you have a LEEP procedure. LEEP stands for loop electrosurgical excision procedure. It is a safe procedure for excising pre-cancerous cells in the cervix.
It is understandable that you would be worried if your follow up to your Pap smear indicated an abnormality. If a LEEP test is advised, you should book one as soon as possible. Les Cours Medical Centre can provide a quick appointment and procedure schedule. However, you need to understand that your doctor recommending a LEEP is not a diagnosis of cervical cancer. There are other procedures to help diagnose cancer that form a full range of testing. These include a colposcopy and a cone biopsy.
