Time for booth visits and demos. My Optica colleague Jon Pugh went to their stand (Booth #6166) in the Dutch pavilion at this week's OFC Conference & Exhibition 2025 in San Francisco. In our video conversation below, you will get the latest on their Erbium Doped Waveguide Amplifiers (EDWAs) for integrated photonics in optical communications. Their team - Ward Hendriks (CTO) and Steve Stoffels (CEO) are on hand until April 3rd to discuss EDWA breakthrough performance metrics, integration strategies, and joint development opportunities. They have also used OFC to announce a strong partnership with Eindhoven University of Technology. During their tests using data rates of 800 Gbits per channel, they achieved a total of 4.8 TB! ALUVIA also shared details of how to get their evaluation kit and actively participate in their quarterly MPW runs. The next run deadline is June 30th (info via [email protected]). Aluvia's AlOx PIC platform delivers broadband operation (200–3000 nm), ultra-low losses, and on-chip gain with scalable industrial processing. EDWAs offer a promising path to on-chip integrated amplification, meeting the growing demand for efficient signal power management in coherent communication networks. As bandwidth requirements continue to rise, scalable, high-performance optical amplifiers are essential for next-generation connectivity.

“The expansion of bandwidth is pushing optical networks to their limits, making high performance, volume-scalable amplification increasingly crucial,” said Theodore (Tod) Sizer, Head of Optical Systems and Device Research Lab at Nokia Bell Labs. “We are keen to evaluate Aluvia’s EDWAs and their ability to boost signals efficiently while enabling tighter photonic integration. If successful, such amplifiers could provide new flexibility in the design of future coherent transceivers.”

“We are entering a phase where integrated optical amplification is moving from research labs to global networks in a very compact package”, notes Prof. Sonia M. Garcia Blanco, co-founder and CSO of Optica corporate member ALUVIA Photonics. "We have also built a strong partnership with Eindhoven University of Technology and actively participate in PhotonDelta."

Founded in November 2022 as a spin-off from the Integrated Optical Systems group of the University of Twente, Aluvia Photonics leverages over a decade of photonics R&D in Enschede to deliver cutting-edge integrated solutions.
