STORYLINE:

Hundreds of police officers, many in riot gear, kept a watchful eye on fans arriving at a football stadium in Athens, where Panathinaikos was scheduled to play against Marseille in a Champions League third qualifying leg 1 match.

The heightened security was added after a 29 year old Greek fan was stabbed to death outside AEK Athens’ stadium, prompting the cancellation of a Champions League qualifier against Dinamo Zagreb on Monday.

Police in Greece have arrested five Croatian nationals allegedly involved in the violence, apprehending them as they attempted to flee the country.

They said the five suspects have been detained in the northwestern port of Igoumenitsa as they prepared to board a ferry bound for Italy.

Earlier on Wednesday, 105 other suspects appeared before a magistrate in Athens for their alleged involvement in attacks which left 10 people injured. Four remain hospitalised.

Seven Greek police officers were suspended pending an internal investigation and a senior public prosecutor has launched an official inquiry into the deadly clashes.
