DR, BDR, and DROTHER are terms related to OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) routing protocol used in computer networks.

DR stands for Designated Router, BDR stands for Backup Designated Router, and DROTHER stands for Other Designated Router.

In an OSPF network, all routers have the same information about the network topology, but when there are many routers, it can become impractical for every router to maintain communication with every other router. To minimize this overhead, OSPF elects a Designated Router (DR) and Backup Designated Router (BDR) in a multiaccess network, such as Ethernet. These routers are responsible for sending and receiving OSPF messages on behalf of all other routers on the network.

All other routers in the network are called DROTHERs. They send and receive OSPF messages only with the DR and BDR.

The DR and BDR are elected based on the highest OSPF priority of the routers in the network. The router with the highest priority becomes the DR, and the router with the second-highest priority becomes the BDR. In case of a tie in priority, the router with the highest router ID (unique identifier) is elected.

The DR and BDR roles are important in minimizing the amount of OSPF traffic in a network. They reduce the number of adjacencies that need to be formed, and they allow for faster convergence in the case of topology changes.
