The Aerial Measuring System – AMS – is a fleet of National Nuclear Security Administration aircraft equipped to respond to nuclear incidents and accidents. AMS is a rapidly deployable Nuclear Emergency Support Team (NEST) capability that can respond anywhere in the United States.

AMS pilots, scientists, and technical personnel are on-call 24 hours per day, 365 days per year to respond to nuclear emergencies.

AMS aircraft are equipped with radiation detection systems to measure low levels of radiation on the ground. Following a release of radioactive material, AMS can provide the fastest and most complete picture of any threat to public safety.

AMS provides decision makers with critical data to protect public health and safety.

With a heritage dating back more than 60 years, the men and women of AMS uphold a proud tradition of service to the American people. As nuclear threats evolve, AMS will always stand ready.

The AMS team is based at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Joint Base Andrews near Washington, D.C.
