Your Place or Mine Features This Luxury Brooklyn Apartment Building

New York City and Los Angeles have long been the backdrops of iconic rom-coms. In Netflix’s latest flick Your Place or Mine, both cities set the scene for a life-changing home swap between best friends Debbie (Reese Witherspoon) and Peter (Ashton Kutcher). Of course, each city is vast. So, where exactly do our beloved characters call home? Ahead, take a look at everything we know about the dreamy settings. NetflixWhere Was Your Place or Mine Filmed? For starters, writer-director Aline Brosh McKenna—who based the film on some of her own experiences—always pictured Peter living in Brooklyn’s Dumbo neighborhood. “Dumbo, once an area of old waterfront warehouse buildings, has transformed into million-dollar lofts and condos,” production designer Bill Arnold said in a press brief. He added: “It’s a very hip and trendy place, which Peter would be attracted to. At the last minute, we found this very beautiful building that would allow us to film inside their lobby and on their garden roof deck while the city would permit us to film outside on the sidewalks.”JoJo Whilden / NetflixIt’s clear that the luxury waterfront apartments at 60 Water Street act as Peter’s home base. “We wanted the New York section to be a really strong element because so much is about Debbie’s journey to New York and how those experiences reawaken her,” director of photography Florian Ballhaus said in the brief. “It was important that we capture as much of that as possible; make it as real as possible, then combine it with the build of Peter’s apartment on stage in Los Angeles.”NetflixDebbie’s house, found by location manager Veronique Vowell, is located in L. A.’s Echo Park neighborhood at the top of a 100-step hillside walkway. The home exterior and garden are featured in the film, and the interior was built on stage along with a duplicate of the garden. Another pivotal location in the film is LAX. Two crucial yet short scenes are set at the airport, but actually shooting there was logistically impossible. Instead, it was recreated at Sunset Gower Studios. The stage—which was originally built for The Three Stooges—was just large enough to hold a real moving walkway, background extras, camera, lights, and grip equipment. Special effects supervisor Ron Bolanowski and his team constructed the people mover from scratch. The construction took place at Bolanowski's San Fernando Valley shop. After various functionality tests, it was broken down, shipped to the studio, and reconstructed. There you have it! With a little movie magic and some stellar locations, Your Place or Mine makes use of traditional, idyllic settings that cement the movie as a delightful modern-day rom-com. You love beautiful homes.
