The game involves defeating enemy characters that emerge from pipes by knocking them out from underneath the floor and kicking them off. If you kick off multiple enemies at once, the score is multiplied by the number of enemies. Each time an enemy is defeated, a coin appears, which can be collected by knocking it from below or touching it, and points are awarded. When all the enemies in a stage are defeated, the stage (phase) is cleared. The difficulty increases as the phase progresses. Every few phases, there is a bonus stage (TEST YOUR SKILL) where you collect coins placed on the field. If you collect all the coins within the time limit, you can earn bonus points.

The Famicom version of Mario Bros., which was the console’s sixth game released on September 9, 1983, and sold approximately 1.63 million copies in Japan, had to adapt to the limited cartridge memory, leading to the omission of certain features like bonus stages with invisible platforms and icicle formations. During a period when there were no ports of the original version, it was traded at a price several times higher than the list price in the used market as a premium software.
In commercials around the time of the release of the Family Computer, “Mario Bros.” was introduced, but Luigi’s color is different (not white but green. The color of the arcade version was green overalls with a brown shirt).
In the Famicom port, due to capacity constraints, some fine productions have been cut compared to the arcade version, and Shellcreeper and Fireball are considerably smaller than in the arcade version.
If you clear PHASE 99, it will be PHASE 0 next and then return to PHASE 1.
There is no ending, and the game continues in a loop until game over.

The POW block, also known as the “Power Floor”, is located in the center of the first stage. It has the same effect as pushing up the entire floor of the stage when pushed up from below. Each use makes the Power Floor thinner, and it disappears after the third time. The Power Floor can affect players and enemy characters on the ground, as well as Fireballs, making it a very powerful attack method.
