A month has passed since Kim Jong-nam, the half-brother of the North Korean leader, was murdered at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
While the investigation is ongoing, it's the diplomatic row between the two nations, essentially holding each other's nationals hostage that's become the main concern.
Kwon Jang-ho takes a look at how it's playing out.
The diplomatic standoff between North Korea and Malaysia seems to be weakening as negotiations between the two have begun.
Malaysia's Attorney-General confirmed that talks with the regime are underway for the release of 9 Malaysian citizens who have been banned from leaving North Korea.

This comes in contrast to the aggressive tone Kuala Lumpur first took when Pyongyang berated the Malaysian government for investigating Kim Jong-nam's death and which led to respective ambassadors to be expelled. But since Pyongyang laid down the order banning Malaysian nationals from leaving the regime, the Malaysian government has been more cautious.


"Malaysia did not expect that the North Korean government would hold the Malaysian citizens.
The Malaysian government have to recover its image as a safe country otherwise it will lose foreign direct investment, as well as foreign tourist. So that's why the Malaysian government initially had very firm position against North Korea."

For North Korea, the release of Kim's body is currently the main priority. The Malaysian health minister said on Monday the government will wait at least another two to three weeks for family members to come claim the body.
But what will happen after that time frame remains unclear, and now that Malaysia has identified the victim to be North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's half-brother, the body could eventually be returned to Pyongyang.


In worst case scenario these hostages can be expendable. This is possible because it is North Korea which does not respect human rights. In negotiation you have to have priorities, which is more important. The Malaysian government's priority is to secure the safety of their citizens.

But once the safety of Malaysian in North Korea is assured, the once close relationship between Pyongyang and Kuala Lumpur could be over.

The Malaysian government in this whole controversy had enough with the North Korean government."

As for North Korea, the regime might have lost one of its few allies in the international community through this diplomatic incident.


What that means is that North Korea's case to claim justifying nuclear and missile tests, their argument will be weakened. And North Korea will have fewer and fewer friends in the world.
