Discover the Barolo made in honour of the King's Mistress at the Fontanafredda Winery

In this On The Road Special Edition, Stevie Kim visits the historic Fontanafredda estate in Barolo, where she is the guest of Roberto Bruno, managing director of the winery, who has worked on the estate for 34 years.

In 1858, the Fontanafredda estate was purchased by the first Italian King Vittorio Emanuele II as a gift for his mistress, Rosa Vercellana.

Today chef Ugo Alciati is preparing one of the region's most typical dishes, "Agnolotti del Plin" served with a roast pork and veal sauce.

Agnolotti del Plin is a typical dish from Piemonte which takes its name from the regional dialect for “pinch,” which is how the pasta is made to form small pouches that are then filled with meat or vegetables.

The dish is paired with a Barolo DOCG Vigna La Rosa, an evocative red wine from the estate named in honour of the king's mistress, "La Bella Rosina".
