SGOT (Serum Glutamic-Oxaloacetic Transaminase) or AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase) is one of the two liver enzymes. The activity of SGOT in serum is increased significantly during heart, liver, kidney and muscle diseases. The activity of SGOT is increased in 4-8 hours following a myocardial infarction, reaching its peak in 2-3 days and declining on fourth or fifth day post infarction. SGOT activity can be estimated in serum / plasma using UV-kinetic method.
