Diabetes in pregnancy includes pre-gestational diabetes (existing Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a condition where glucose intolerance develops during pregnancy 🤰. Poor glycemic control can lead to complications for both the mother and fetus. Maternal risks include preeclampsia, infections, and cesarean delivery, while fetal risks include macrosomia (large baby), shoulder dystocia, neonatal hypoglycemia, and congenital anomalies in pre-gestational diabetes. Diagnosis involves oral glucose tolerance testing (OGTT) during the second trimester. Management includes dietary modifications, glucose monitoring, and, if necessary, insulin therapy or oral hypoglycemics like metformin 💉. Regular ultrasounds assess fetal growth and amniotic fluid levels, and timely delivery is planned to minimize complications.
